This is a delightful collection of Russian folk dances and folk songs rendered with great authenticity by the “Rodnye Napevy” (“Native Tunes”) Folk Ensemble from the Vladimir Region of Russia. There is an amazing array of colorful, rarely heard folk instruments, including whistles, gusli, zhaleiki, svireli, and fiddles, as well as the more familiar balalaika and bayan (button accordion). The extraordinarily versatile performers (who formed the ensemble back in 1987) not only play but sing as well. As is typical for Russian folk music, the tunes display a great variety of tempos, moods, and human emotions. The notes, in E, G, and R, are well written and informative.
